More Pics of our Trip to Build-a-Bear

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Happy October everyone! Looking forward to cooler weather down in South Texas!!!

I am fortunate that I am working at an IB World school where we promote Internationalism throughout the curriculum, the school and our community. Our 1st Planner, "Who we are" focused primarily of Citizenship. Throughout the 6 weeks students asked themselves what a citizen was, how character affects citizenship and how they can make their world a better place to live in. While learning about citizenship, we were reminded about the children battling cancer and other childhood diseases during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. My students wanted to help the children at our local cancer treatment center by creating homemade cards, but wanted to do more. As part of an International Bacheloreatte School, we also promote Action by Doing. So we did!

First grade families met at our local Build-a Bear Workshop one day after school and built sweet bears and bunnies, dressed them up and dedicated them to the children at the cancer center. 15 Build-a-Bears will be donated to bring a little comfort and companionship to the children.

The best compliment we could have ever gotten came from the parents. They were so proud of their 6 year olds. Without any hesitation, they learned the gift of giving. They unselfishly walked out of Build-a-Bear without their animals.
We are so proud of our "FIRSTIES"! We will be meeting the families again at the

local Cancer Treatment Center later this week to deliver their handpainted cards and Stuffed Animals.
