Happy Holidays and Cheers to a Very Happy New Year!

Starting a blog was a lot easier in the summer when all I had was time! This year has been quite hectic, with sending my oldest Megan to.college, to following my sons high school football career, to making sure my five year old is adjusting well to kinder, all while trying to teach first!!! Crazy but fun! I literally have hundreds of units I've bought and downloaded since the summer. I can't wait to start on my penguin unit in January. I've always taught Penguins and Antarctica so.I'm looking forward to some fresh ideas. I'll be throwing in a little Internationalism with the New Years Chinese unit I just purchased Jennifer at First Grade Blue Skies!!!

My goal in 2012 is to learn how to upload and create attractive units!!!! Cheers to 2012...may you have a blessed New Year!

Thankful moments in First Grade

A little late but here are a few thankful moments in 1st grade. The kids enjoyed creating Turkey Glyphs this Thanksgiving along with some cute Turkey Thoughts!

We invited some of our friends from 4th grade to help us weave some placemats just like in the early colonial days. Afterward, we graphed our favorite PIE, Apple or Pumpkin and enjoyed delicious pies and gave thanks to our wonderful parents!

I have so much to be thankful for this year. May you all continue to have a terrific 1st Semester!
Happy Holidays!!!

More Pics of our Trip to Build-a-Bear

Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

Happy October everyone! Looking forward to cooler weather down in South Texas!!!

I am fortunate that I am working at an IB World school where we promote Internationalism throughout the curriculum, the school and our community. Our 1st Planner, "Who we are" focused primarily of Citizenship. Throughout the 6 weeks students asked themselves what a citizen was, how character affects citizenship and how they can make their world a better place to live in. While learning about citizenship, we were reminded about the children battling cancer and other childhood diseases during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. My students wanted to help the children at our local cancer treatment center by creating homemade cards, but wanted to do more. As part of an International Bacheloreatte School, we also promote Action by Doing. So we did!

First grade families met at our local Build-a Bear Workshop one day after school and built sweet bears and bunnies, dressed them up and dedicated them to the children at the cancer center. 15 Build-a-Bears will be donated to bring a little comfort and companionship to the children.

The best compliment we could have ever gotten came from the parents. They were so proud of their 6 year olds. Without any hesitation, they learned the gift of giving. They unselfishly walked out of Build-a-Bear without their animals.
We are so proud of our "FIRSTIES"! We will be meeting the families again at the

local Cancer Treatment Center later this week to deliver their handpainted cards and Stuffed Animals.

Rainbows

Rainbows

Our 1st Science Unit is on Weather. My students wanted to know how Rainbows were formed. Great Question! So after a little research, the students were ready to show off what they had learned. Thanks to Painted Paper, Roy G. Biv and some blogging, we created our very own Rainbows. We even created Rainbow Hair...this was one of my favorites!

Pictures of my Groovy classroom with a twist!

For the first week of school we concentrated on A House for Hermit Crab. I had to hang seaweed and sea life in my reading corner. The kids love it and so do I. I always love to saturate my classroom with literature, games and artifacts when introducing a new theme. The kids fall in love with learning when they have choices and interesting things to read. I love the memory game made of sea shells from South Padre Island. It's fun and very affordable. I'm also loving the Bucket idea! We have read the book twice in two days. A new student enrolled and was clueless. I'll actually read it anytime my kids need a little reminding! Hope to post more pictures later this week of student work!
