Peace, Love, Penguins!

One of my favorite units of the year is Penguins! I love to see my student's faces as they walk in the door after Christmas Break! The wonder and excitemnet in their eyes is priceless! After 20 years of digging out my old Penguin and Antarctica Files....I decided to leave them in the cabinet and try some new things I've bought and adopted from my fellow blogger friends! I'm thrilled!!! Not only are the children excited but I am as well. I absolutely love the fresh ideas....still the same content but done with a little modern flair! Here are just a few pictures from this week!

Hi Lisa! I just saw the comment you made above =) I use a Mac...and then turn my creations from a "word" type document into a PDF. I know most PC users do theirs in powerpoint and then convert it to a PDF.
Anyway, here is what I found on time. (my email is laughinbrunette@hotmail.com if you want to email for any questions, etc =)

(hope they help!)

Hi, I'm your newest follower :)

I read your comment on Jennifer's {firstgradeblueskies} blog thought I could try and help. How I teach time to my little ones is by making a gigantic watch.

I use a paper plate as the face of the watch and make hands with construction paper. Then I use butcher paper and cut two large rectangles and attach to each side of the face of the watch. This will be the bands. I sit them in a circle on the carpet and introduce "time" and why its important. We discuss "long hand" and "short hand", then I'd ask "what time is it when we come to school, go to recess, eat lunch, go home, etc.". I teach them rules like "when the long hand is on 12 we say o'clock, when its on 6 we say "thirty" and so forth. We continue to brainstorm on types of clocks and we can take it further and cover writing standards by having them create/ design their own watch. Hope this makes sense :)
